Teaching Kids About Water
It won’t be long before our water supply and water quality will be in the hands of today’s students, which is why Helix seeks to introduce these topics in the schools within our service area. We want these kids to grow up to be stewards of California’s watersheds and hope that our programs start them down that path.
Ms. Smarty Plants
Helix would like to sponsor a Ms. Smarty Plants Grows Earth Heroes assembly at your school. Ms. Smarty Plants, who comes from The Water Conservation Garden, tailors her interactive assembly per grade level and aligns her content with State of California and NGSS standards. Although schools are calling to have Ms. Smarty Plants back again this year, please note that our goal is to use our limited funds to reach out to all of the schools in our service area before booking repeat performances. Water is Life Poster Contest
This program from Metropolitan Water District of Southern California includes K-12 students from throughout the six Southern California counties in Metropolitan’s service area. Students submit their posters by March, Helix employees select the local winners to forward to Los Angeles, where Metropolitan selects 36 to feature in the Water is Life Calendar the following year. The calendar is distributed to 11,000 people and 20,000 people see the 26 week, traveling exhibit showcasing the posters.
This poster is the work of James Gonzales, a third grade student at St. John of the Cross Catholic School in Lemon Grove. James is one of the 36 finalists whose poster will be featured in the 2016 Water is Life calendar.
R.M. Levy Water Treatment Plant Tour
We sponsor the school busses so you can bring your fifth graders to see how Helix turns water from the Colorado River and the State Water Project into the drinking water in their homes. The two hour tour, from 9:30 to 11:30, takes students past the control room, through the chemistry lab, over the mixing and sedimentation basins and under the water filters. The tour meets State of California standards for fifth grade water curriculum. Note that we need ID for each adult a week before the tour and physical ID the day of the tour.
CSDA Video Contest
Create a one-minute video telling the public, “What’s so special about special districts.” What is a special district? It’s a local government agency formed by local voters to perform a specific task. There are many types of special districts in California including water, parks and recreation and fire protection districts. The contest is open to high school students and CSDA is offering $1,000, $750 and $500 prizes for students and $250 for the high school. Applications and videos are due on April 1, 2018.
High School Photo Contest
This contest challenges high school photographers in Helix’s service area to capture water — the lack, value, beauty or anything of water—in San Diego County. Students submit photos in March: up to three photos in black and white or color and mounted. The photos are judged by a panel of professional photographers and Helix staff and winners are notified and awarded cash prizes up to $250 in May.
Dr. Lillian M. Childs and Robert D. Friedgen scholarships
At Helix Water District, we are committed to the principles of service, integrity and continuous improvement. These two scholarships give us the opportunity to recognize students who demonstrate these same principles in their own life and provide financial assistance for college. Each scholarship is worth $1,000 and is available to students graduating from high school in spring 2018 and attending a four year university in fall 2018. Click on the link below for details.
Helix awards $250 mini-grants to teachers each year to fund water related curriculum and activities at their schools. Contact the number below for an application.
